One of the young researchers of the cosmic experience crew is currently at work at the Pierre Auger Observatory in
Argentina. He is collecting data with the new radio detectors. Cosmic rays are measured through the particle shower they create in the atmosphere. Standard detection focuses on the particles in the shower that reach the ground, or on the faint light that the shower produces in the atmosphere. However, the latter method can only be used 10% of the time: on clear, moonless night. The new radio detectors probe a different aspect of the cosmic-ray shower. They detect radio radiation emitted by charged particles in the shower. This method can be used all the time! In Europe, these measurements are not possible because the cosmic-ray radio signals are too weak to detect among all the man-made radio waves.

Nice picture Harm! It`s great that you can explore the universe in Argentina!
